About Writehere.ie
Writehere.ie is being developed by Kids’ Own Publishing Partnership in collaboration with Children’s Books Ireland and the National Youth Council of Ireland to provide a space for young people who are interested in developing their creative writing and critical skills.
With the rapid advancement of virtual technologies, young people are at the forefront of online development and proportionately have the greatest online presence within the population. With this in mind, we believe that the internet can provide a rich platform for learning and creative exchange and can serve as a valuable tool for young people to direct their own learning.
Through the use of new technologies, this project will enable young people who are serious about writing to connect with each other online, receive tuition from professional writers and develop a body of work to critique among their peers in a safe environment.
Who is it for?
The project is aimed at any young people who are interested in creative writing. The pilot phase is aimed specifically at those aged between 14 and 16, with most relevance to those in 2nd year or Transition year.
Project structure
There are two phases to this project, as outlined below:
1) During Phase One we will recruit a select number of young people to take part in an online creative writing programme under the tuition of a professional writer. The course will take place over 6 weeks during the summer break of 2010, with a physical meeting at the beginning to bring together and familiarise the group, and a meeting at the end to celebrate the creative body of work produced, and discuss the development of the associated website in Phase Two.
Online meetings will be facilitated through Adobe Connect – interactive video-conferencing software, designed primarily for use in learning environments.
For the duration of the pilot phase, Kids’ Own will design and set up a static homepage for the website through which the young people in the working group can link to their online creative sessions.
2) In Phase Two, we will work with the young people to establish a focus group for the development of the associated website. Driven by the vision of the young people in response to their needs from the pilot phase, we will develop an interactive online portal which will provide a sustainable resource and support structure for a wider audience of young writers.
The focus group will oversee the ongoing management and community development of the website with the support of Kids’ Own.
An additional dimension to the project will take the form of a publication of the work produced by the young writers – both those in the focus group, as well as new members of the website.
